Allstate Joins Us in Tulsa for The Backyard Bowl
Listed by one source as the number one high school football rivalry in the country, the Union vs. Jenks game is played annually at the University of Tulsa’s Skelly Stadium. The Mid-First Bank Backyard Bowl draws 20,000 fans, with some games topping 30,000, and the record maxing out at 40,035. Most schools across the country would be lucky to draw 40,000 for the entire season, but this is just one game, some might say “THE” game. There are 15 state titles between the two teams. Union owning three 6A titles (‘05, ‘04, ‘02) and one Class C title (‘63). Jenks has nine 6A Titles (‘06,‘03, ‘01, ‘00, ‘99, ‘98, ‘97, ‘96, ‘93) one 5A Title (‘82) and one 3A Title (‘79). These two teams leave little doubt why this game is such a long, historic rivalry. Jenks, won the Backyard Bowl last year and also won the State 6A Championship for the ninth time, recapturing the title from Union who had won it the previous two years. Between these two teams, no other high school in Class 6A in Oklahoma has won the state title since 1995. As part of the Great American Rivalry Series, Allstate will be presenting a $500 scholarship to the top student athlete on each team as well as honoring the night's Most Valuable Player. They will also be presenting certificates to two former Union and Jenks players as the first inductees into the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame. You can bet that this game, like all of the rest, will be forever remembered as one of the classics of the Backyard Bowl. This game is featured as one of the 2007 Great American Rivalry Series, because it is just that, a Great American Rivalry.
